ENDOPOWER was developed by BARMER in cooperation with Electro-Zeutika GmbH, University Hospital Cologne and participating specialist gynaecology practices. The program is currently available to eligible BARMER-insured patients aged 18 and over in North Rhine-Westphalia who have suspected or diagnosed endometriosis or adenomyosis. Through the ENDOPOWER program, patients receive 12 months of individually coordinated support, delivered by University Hospital Cologne or a participating specialist practice. Depending on their circumstances and clinical eligibility, participants may receive an OSKA Pulse device to use in their everyday lives for up to one year, with the associated costs covered by BARMER.

“For the women affected, ENDOPOWER is an alternative to burdensome medications or recurring surgeries,” said João Rodrigues, State Director at BARMER.

Endometriosis is a complex, chronic condition that can cause severe pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, inflammation, fatigue and fertility challenges. The World Health Organization estimates that endometriosis affects approximately 190 million women and girls of reproductive age worldwide. Diagnosis can take between four and twelve years, and access to effective treatment remains limited in many parts of the world. BARMER recognises that patients often require more than a single treatment or intervention. The program begins with a comprehensive medical consultation and an assessment of each participant’s medical, psychological and social circumstances.

Patients and their clinicians then determine which support options are most appropriate. These may include education, symptom-tracking journals, digital support, specialist consultations, access to OSKA Pulse and, where clinically required, review by an interdisciplinary team spanning gynaecology, visceral surgery, urology and radiology, or minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgery.

“Endometriosis affects every patient differently, which is why flexible, personalised and multidisciplinary programs such as ENDOPOWER are so important,” said Darren Wedge, Director International Operations of OSKA. “We are proud that OSKA Pulse has been selected as one component of this comprehensive care pathway. The program gives eligible patients an opportunity to use the device consistently in their everyday lives while remaining supported by their treating clinicians and specialist healthcare teams.”

Making supportive technology more accessible

OSKA Pulse is a lightweight, portable and non-invasive medical device that uses Pulsed Electromagnetic Field technology, commonly known as PEMF. The wearable format allows patients to incorporate the device into their daily routines without requiring direct skin contact. It is designed to support condition management, reduce inflammation and assist the body’s natural healing processes.

Within ENDOPOWER, the use of OSKA Pulse is accompanied by regular counselling and online advisory services. Involvement of a major statutory health insurer is particularly significant because reimbursement can help remove financial barriers that may otherwise prevent patients from accessing supportive healthcare technologies.

“This program demonstrates what can be achieved when insurers, clinicians, specialist hospitals and medical-technology providers work together around the needs of the patient,” said Axenia Schafer of Electro-Zeutika. “It creates an important model for bringing non-invasive, drug-free support into structured clinical pathways while maintaining medical oversight and personalised decision-making.”

A model for integrated endometriosis care

There is currently no known cure for endometriosis, and treatment may involve a combination of medication, hormone therapy, pain-management strategies, lifestyle support and surgery. The appropriate approach depends on the individual’s symptoms, circumstances and treatment objectives.

OSKA believes initiatives such as ENDOPOWER can help advance the global conversation about endometriosis care by demonstrating the value of:

  • Earlier access to specialist assessment.

  • Individualised treatment planning.

  • Ongoing support between medical appointments.

  • Patient participation in treatment decisions.

  • Multidisciplinary clinical collaboration.

  • Improved access to supportive medical technology.

  • Insurer-backed programs that reduce out-of-pocket costs.

The program also highlights the potential for wearable technologies to complement established medical care by providing patients with practical support outside traditional clinical environments.
